Eruv

"Eruv" refers to a fence --either real or symbolic-- that surrounds a Jewish neighborhood, permitting carrying within its boundaries. The eruv chatzeirot operates so that all the residents treat the entire area as their home--it legally transforms a shared living area into a common one. The presence of a valid eruv enables people to carry or move virtually all items outdoors within its boundaries on Shabbat.
